Although found in different locations around the world (Burma (Myanmar), Malawi, Madagascar, Mozambique) the rubies from Greenland are a recent discovery, being officially recorded in the 1960s. Chemically similar to gems found in other locations, they are distinctly different. Identified by gem labs by their trance element chemistry, each gemstone tells a unique story of its journey through time and temperature.

Who knew that beneath all the ice and snow in Greenland, a red and pink treasure would be discovered? Buried for nearly 3 billion years, Greenland Ruby gems are unearthed at a pristine location in Aappaluttoq, {Ah-puh-lu-tok} meaning ‘Red’ in Greenlandic.

Traceability – From mine-to-market
Given the complex and fragmented nature of the global gem industry, the challenge of traceability is significant. Greenland Ruby has set up a mine-to-market track-and-trace program for their gems since mining began in 2017. Certified by the Greenlandic Government, this program assures a transparent source chain that, to this very day, remains rare in the colored gemstone industry.
This way, each gem is tracked and traced from the mine all the way into the hands of designers, manufacturers, retailers. Every parcel of Greenland Ruby rough is given a number, and the gems produced subsequently from that parcel are given their own unique numbers that link back to the original – almost like a family-tree. The gem’s unique number remains with each ruby and pink sapphire throughout its journey including heat treatment, cutting, sorting and jewelry manufacturing.
The rubies and pink sapphires from Greenland Ruby also come with a Certificate of Origin or a Card of Authenticity, approved by the Government of Greenland.
Paving the Way to Sustainability
Greenland Ruby is the first colored mining operation certified by the Responsible Jewellery Council, attesting the company’s commitment to responsible mining and sustainable practices. Greenland Ruby is firm about their commitment to preserving the pristine location of its mine, which is located in a drained waterway amidst an icy mountainous landscape and surrounded by majestic fjords. Upon completion of their work there, the drained aqueduct will be refilled, all equipment and buildings will be removed, and the site will be fully restored to its natural wilderness.
In addition to their commitment to the environment a percentage of all sales goes towards the PinkPolarBear Foundation. The foundation contributes towards education and international polar research into the effects of climate change in the Arctic region, particularly Greenland.
